Three Cal players in bowl game
California University seniors Tommie Campbell, Terrance Moore and Josh Portis have each been selected to participate in the Valero Cactus Bowl on Jan. 7.
The Cactus Bowl, which is an all-star game featuring NCAA Division II senior football players, will be played at Javelina Stadium in Kingsville, Texas, on the campus of Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Campbell, a 6-3 cornerback, played in all 12 games this season and finished with 29 tackles (17 solo) and two interceptions. A former linebacker and safety at Pitt, he made both of his interceptions in the NCAA Playoffs against Bloomsburg.
A wide receiver for the Vulcans, Moore posted 659 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on 51 catches this year. In only two seasons with the program, he totaled 109 receptions for 1,753 yards and 21 touchdowns, which ranks third in school history.
Portis was selected as an alternate for the Cactus Bowl after starting the last two years at quarterback for Cal U. As a senior, he led the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in passing efficiency after throwing 33 touchdowns and completing 61.2 percent of his passes. Portis finished his career as the program’s all-time leader with 69 touchdown passes and ranks fourth with 6,072 passing yards.
This marks the fifth time in six years that the Vulcans will be represented at the Cactus Bowl. Last year, wide receivers Dominique Curry and AJ Jackson and cornerback Terrence Johnson were selected to the Cactus Bowl. Curry went on to play two games with the St. Louis Rams this season before being placed on injured reserve in September.
