Former Waynesburg University wrestler Anthony Bonaventura left today to take part in the D3wrestle.com Cultural Exchange program. The event, which is coordinated Tim Fader, the head wrestling coach at Wisconsin-Whitewater, will take a group of Division III wrestlers through Istanbul, Turkey; Bucharest, Romania; Paris, France and throughout Bulgaria, before returning to the United States June 9.
Bonaventura was the runner-up at 174 pounds at the NCAA Division III Championships this year.
“I heard about the event through D3wrestle.com,” Bonaventura said. “While I was training at the Naval Academy, I became close with some guys from Wisconsin Whitewater and my father talked with their head coach about my desire to continue competing as a wrestler.”
During the trip, Bonaventura and the other American wrestlers will go to each country’s Olympic training center. Following training, they wrestle in tournament-style competition.
“I was super excited to hear that I was going on the trip. I’ve never been out of North America,” Bonaventura said “It’s an expensive trip, but my parents are paying my way as a graduation present. I am interested to see how some of these countries are staying head of the game in terms of international competition.”
After returning to the U.S., Bonaventura will travel to Fargo, N.D., to compete in the 2014 USA Wrestling Greco-Roman World Team Trials. The top-three finishers at each weight in the NCAA Division III championships earned automatic spots in the event, which is being held June 13-14 and July 22. Because he is entered in the 80 kg (176 pounds) weight class, Bonaventura will compete in July.
“The thought of actually qualifying for the World Team Trials just put me in a state of disbelief. I really didn’t think I could jump into the next level of my competition career,” Bonaventura said. “I would have rather jumped into freestyle, but I’m not going to pass this opportunity up. I’m just excited to go on to the senior level of competition.”Chris Duganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07239434367459789061noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842208498112257433.post-54397675993624412792014-05-24T20:16:00.001-04:002014-05-24T20:17:23.109-04:00Bittel pitches Seton Hill to World Series

Former PIAA champion Colin Johnston is making the most of his final season as a wrestler at West Virginia.

The 2006 Class AAA state champion at 112 pounds while at Canon-McMillan, Johnston is a sixth-year senior at WVU. After battling back from multiple shoulder injuries that have hampered his career, Johnston has a 22-7 record this season and is ranked No. 17 nationally at 141 pounds.

Johnston was named West Virginia’s Athlete of the Week Jan. 20 for his performance in the Mountaineers’ dual meet two days earlier against nationally ranked Oklahoma State. Johnston defeated the Cowboys’ No. 12-ranked Anthony Collica, 8-4.

Johnston took Collica to the mat twice in the first period. Collica recorded an escape and reversal to cut his deficit to 4-3 after one period, and scored an escape start the second period. Johnston then recorded his third takedown and turned Collica for a two back points to secure the victory.

It was the second consecutive win for Johnston over a ranked opponent. He defeated No. 20 Dan Neff of Lock Haven 12-7 on Jan. 4.

Johnston is second on the team with 39 points scored in dual meets and tied for second with seven falls, the latter a career high. He has a team-high 11 dual-meet victories, his lone loss coming to then-No. 19-ranked Joe Spisak of Virginia Nov. 2.

“I just started to get my mojo back, you can say. It’s clicking now,” Johnston recently told msnsports.net. “There are still things I have to work on, but I’m doing alright. I still have the same goals, and that’s to win a national championship. It’s going to take a lot of hard work.”

Johnston had a 164-10 career record at Canon-McMillan.
The 2013 class features Tom Benic (wrestling), Carrie Banaszak (volleyball), E. Lee North (Robert M. Murphy Award Winner), Kaitlyn Orstein (swimming), Frank Pilato (football) and James White (wrestling and tennis coach).
The induction ceremony will take place Oct. 11 in the Rossin Campus Center Allen Ballroom. The 2013 induction class also will be recognized at halftime of the Presidents’ football game against Thomas More the following evening at Cameron Stadium.
Benic (Class of 1967) finished his career with 50 victories in 59 matches, which is the fourth-best career winning percentage in W&J wrestling history. Benic won Presidents’ Athletic Conference championships in 1965, ‘66 and ‘67. At the time of his graduation, he was only the second President to win three league titles. Since then, only eight others have accomplished the feat.
Banaszak (1999) played two years of volleyball for the Presidents after transferring from Westminster. She became one of NCAA Division III’s top players, leading the Presidents to a 55-10 record and two PAC championships. She also led W&J to a pair of ECAC Division III tournament titles, the first two in program history. The 1998 CoSIDA Academic All-American and ECAC tournament MVP, Banaszak finished with 613 kills (.439 hitting percentage) and 180 blocks.
North (1946) wrote the definitive book on Washington & Jefferson football, “Battling The Indians, Panthers, and Nittany Lions”. The book, which chronicled the first 100 years of Presidents football, was published in 1991 and described in detail many of the people and stories W&J is so proud of today. Following graduation, North, who was a Red & Black editor as a student, spent two years as the school’s publicity director and has written 13 books.
Orstein (2008) dominated NCAA Division III swimming during her four years as a President. She won eight national championships, including the 200 individual medley (2005, ’07 and ’08), 400 individual medley (’05 and ’06), 200 breaststroke (’07 and ’08) and 100 breaststroke (’08). She holds the national record in the 200 IM (2:00.27) and finished her career as a 14-time All-American. A 25-time PAC champion, Orstein set 10 conference records.
Pilato (2005) is one of 10 football players in W&J history to earn Associated Press Little All-America status. He is also just one of two players to be twice named to the American Football Coaches Association Division III All-America Team. Pilato holds the W&J record with 18 interceptions despite not moving to the safety position until his sophomore year. The Presidents posted a 41-7 record with Pilato and his teams made three NCAA Division III playoff appearances, including a school-record 12 victories in 2004 as W&J advanced to the national quarterfinals.
White spent 33 years as a head coach at W&J in wrestling and tennis. A 1994 inductee into the Washington-Greene chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, White retired with the most combined victories as a W&J head coach (576) and has only been passed by 2012 inductee Vicki Staton. White led the wrestling program to three PAC titles (1965, ’66 and ‘95), while guiding the tennis team to four league championships (1967, ‘68, ’69 and ‘86). White coached 25 PAC individual champions, five NCAA All-Americans and two of the college’s 36 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.
For more information on attending the induction ceremony, contact the W&J athletic office at 724-223-6054. collected votes from each of the nine head baseball coaches in the PAC. The
Presidents and 11th year head coach Jeff Mountain totaled six of the nine
available first-place votes and accumulated 77 of a maximum 81 total points.

appreciate the respect from the league’s coaches, but a preseason poll is
merely a guess of how a long season will play out. The strength of the league,
combined with the most difficult non-conference schedule we’ve faced during my
