Dig it: Vulcans advance
The California University women's volleyball team advanced to the second
round of the NCAA Division II tournament by defeating Gannon 3-0 (25-21,
25-21, 25-20) Thursday afternoon at the Alma Grace McDonough Center in Wheeling, W.Va.
The third-seeded Vulcans were led by Laurel
Miller, who led all players with 12 kills, as well as Molly Delaney’s
nine kills. With the win, California improves to 29-8 and will now face
the winner of Clarion-Seton Hill tomorrow evening. The Vulcans have now
advances past the first round of the NCAA Tournament in each of the last
eight years,
Abbey Freund and Kristen Scurpa directed the offense with 16 and 10 assists.
The Vulcans won five of the finals seven points
in the opening set, while Delaney’s four kills pushed California to
victory in the second set and secured the sweep after winning the third
set behind a .280 hitting percentage.
